Pursuing 132 for the success, Ajinkya Rahane hit a splendid 44 preceding captain Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 20 to control them past the end goal. Prior, Umesh Yadav culled two early wickets before Varun Chakaravarthy and Andre Russell entered the wicket-takers segment, leaving CSK wobbling at 61/5. Yet, Ravindra Jadeja (26*) and MS Dhoni (50*) made a splendid showing to restore Chennai's innings after early blows. The pair set up 70 to assist Chennai with posting 131/5 out of 20 overs. On the bowling front, Umesh got two while Russell and Chakaravarthy enrolled one wicket each. Chennai, one of the most steady sides since the competition's commencement in 2008, had crushed Kolkata to lift their fourth IPL title the year before.
